PCD Talks | SPICE: collectively shaping the future of sustainable cosmetics packaging

In 2020, SPICE launched an online science-based ecodesign tool to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of any cosmetic packaging throughout its life cycle, covering 16 environmental indicators. The SPICE Tool leverages the SPICE environmental footprinting methodology, co-built by the members from 2018, aligned with the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint, together with the SPICE database, specific to cosmetic packaging materials and decoration processes.
Along with the Tool, SPICE continuously develops guidelines and best practice materials for the cosmetics packaging industry, including:
– Environmental claims guidelines
– A recyclability assessment guide for cosmetics packaging
– A guide for assessing the post-consumer recycled content of cosmetics packaging
During this PCD conference, L’Oréal, Quantis and Unilever Prestige shared insights from SPICE, discussed the benefits and impacts of pre-competitive collaboration and explained how SPICE will evolve to continue accelerating the cosmetics industry’s sustainable packaging transformation.
