Re-inventing packaging for circularity with SPICE

The cosmetics industry faces mounting pressure to move beyond linear packaging models. With regulatory requirements tightening and consumers demanding greater accountability, the shift toward circular packaging is no longer optional; it is a strategic and environmental imperative. Yet translating circularity ambitions into concrete material and design decisions remains a significant challenge for brands of all sizes.
This session introduces SPICE (Sustainable Packaging Initiative for CosmEtics), a cross-industry methodology and tool designed to help cosmetic brands make informed, science-based packaging choices. Together, SPICE members have built a harmonized, science-based life-cycle methodology and a dedicated ecodesign tool that let brands compare packaging options — across material choice, manufacturing and decoration, recyclability, reuse potential, and end-of-life — and make informed, defensible decisions.
In 25 minutes, attendees will walk away understanding:
– The business and environmental case for circular cosmetics packaging
– What SPICE is: scope, governance, and industry adoption
– How the SPICE ecodesign approach turns life-cycle metrics into real design decisions
– The SPICE methodology and tool in action, illustrated with case studies
